Every time I embark on a solo journey, it feels like a much-needed spiritual awakening. I’m overworked, tired, and ready to reevaluate my life and readjust my goals to align with my purpose.

My first awakening occurred on my first big solo trip to Europe in my early twenties. I was meeting up with a group of other backpackers, but I didn’t get the memo about using an actual backpack. Instead, I was lugging around a suitcase and a duffle bag. Despite my lack of physical preparation, I was about to embark on an adventure that would unlock a lifetime of wanderlust.

At first, my brain was in survivor mode. I was paranoid about people, surroundings, and food. But after the initial assessment, something unlocked within me. I felt liberated. Free. Adventurous. Curious. Optimistic.

I went on tastings and tours, and I discovered my limits with people, places, and things. I pushed myself beyond my comfort zone. I laughed and smiled, even though I didn’t speak the language. I was relaxed, even though I didn’t know where I was.

But then, there were pockets of moments where I reflected on life. How was my year? What made me sad back home? How could I change it? Traveling allowed me to reassess my circumstances without the distractions of everyday life.

I retreated to nature and sacred sites to think and appreciate. I immersed myself in new cultures, showing respect and appreciation. I did and saw things I’d never experienced before.

When I returned home, I had new goals, action plans, and stories to share with friends and family. I encouraged them to do the same thing for themselves.

Solo travel is a powerful tool for spiritual growth. It allows us to step outside of our comfort zones, explore new perspectives, and connect with our inner selves. If you’re feeling overworked, tired, or lost, I encourage you to consider a solo journey. It may just be the spiritual awakening you need.
