Learn How To Start THERAPY:
The personal steps I took to be better.
1st and most important, I’m a baller on a budget. Second, don’t get it twisted, I’m a multimillionaire in the making (I’m manifesting and wouldn’t write anything else.)
But as a budgetnista, it was important to me to find a therapist that wasn’t so crazy expensive. $300 every month using BetterHelp was not in my budget. Lets me be honest, as a woman of color, seeking professional help with a licensed mental health counselor was not something easily accessible generational and contradicted the status of a strong black woman narrative.
But Mama is tired, and being strong and black is out of style. Our health care is essential to our survival. Do you believe the world is getting better or more complex? It all depends on who answers the question? Because the answer will vary based on economic status, social class, and gender or lack of. Perspective is everything.
Therapy would give you an unbiased, healthy opinion, and the price of that advice may vary based on your available resources.
What can you afford, and what insurance do you have?
I have been seeking professional therapy for years. At least since 2016, and the times I’ve tried to look up options, the price was always the indicating factor on why I didn’t proceed to get help. Google your insurance company and the word “therapy” in the same search. With my new job and the insurance they offer, I was able to find a network that provides mental health counselors at the co-payment of $15 per session. Best believe I’m scheduled on a bi-weekly session with Dr. Cooper. Without this pairing of benefits and optional providers, bettering yourself by choice is financially burdening and often a luxury.
Feeling comfortable to test out multiple therapists is necessary. You wouldn’t marry the 1st person you’ve ever dated, therefore, having someone you respect and admire, with similar values, can be crucial to your development.
As a black girl, I wanted someone who looked or worked with individuals in my current position. I read their bios carefully and met with over three therapists before I made a decision.
After my session today with Dr. Copper, dumping all my thoughts and sorting out my opportunities, I am clear-headed space and writing a blog on how much better I feel. Creativity is open and fully operational for healthy information to flow through. The brain dumping and unbiased guidance allowed clarity and a new perspective to develop, enough to write it down and share it with others. So get help, Save for it, do whatever it takes to be fully functional in the present. Your life and dreams may depend on it.
If you can’t afford therapy yet, write down your thoughts, sort through your challenges. List them and work on them one at a time until you are satisfied with the results you’ve been able to overcome.
