From Luxury to Necessity: Making Mental and Spiritual Health Affordable

Healing is often seen as a luxury, requiring access to resources and the energy necessary for making deliberate choices towards a healthier path — be it mentally, spiritually, or emotionally. Yet, for many, healing isn’t just a beneficial choice but a critical necessity, especially when their life or well-being hangs in the balance. However, when the ability to choose healing is available, it’s a privilege underscored by the financial means to support such a journey.

The cost of therapy alone, which varies by location, can range from $100 to $200 per session, assuming one even has health insurance. Considering that between 55% and 63% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, with half unable to spare an extra $100 without financial strain, the pursuit of mental health support becomes a distant dream for many. This financial barrier leaves a significant portion of the population without the essential help that could pivot their lives towards improvement, including financial stability.

Moreover, the healing journey often extends beyond traditional therapy. It encompasses classes, spiritual retreats, holistic coaching, guidance from gurus, and meditation sessions. These experiences can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000, with one-on-one coaching sessions priced between $75 to $200 — expenses typically not covered by insurance and requiring out-of-pocket payment. Consequently, a staggering 55% of adults experiencing mental health issues in the U.S. have not received treatment, often due to financial constraints.

The stress connection to illness is well-documented, with an estimated 75 to 90% of diseases linked to stress. Yet, spirituality, a powerful tool for coping, remains underutilized. Spirituality can aid in managing illness, reducing stress and negative emotions, enhancing quality of life, bolstering social support, and even offering antidepressant effects through increased serotonin and dopamine levels. It can also help individuals find meaning, accept their circumstances, and practice forgiveness — actions known to contribute to improved health, including better immune function.

So, the question arises: How can we democratize healing, making it accessible to all, regardless of financial standing? The path to universal healing requires systemic changes, including broader insurance coverage, affordable healing practices, and increased awareness of the profound benefits spirituality can bring to our lives. Making healing accessible to everyone not only uplifts individuals but strengthens our communities, paving the way for a healthier, more resilient society.
