Discipline is still Freedom

Discipline often carries the stigma of being dull or restrictive. Yet, it’s this very discipline that paves the way to the freedom many of us yearn for — a life where we can work from a home office nestled on a few acres, tend to a garden, sip on natural spring water, and ride horses at dawn. Discipline is the bridge to the life where our higher selves truly thrive.

But why is maintaining discipline such a challenge? Why do we falter and struggle to regain our footing? One reason is the resistance we experience — be it pain, effort, stress, or fear of failure. These negative sensations can deter us from staying the course.

When we embrace discipline, we should thrive within it. Consider the consistency of a Mediterranean diet — it’s not just healthy but also a testament to disciplined eating habits. The discipline of regular workouts, waking up early to structure a productive day, or meal prepping to save money for that dream vacation — all these practices are stepping stones to the freedom we desire.

Pursuing our goals with discipline, especially those that excite us, and saving diligently towards them, brings immense satisfaction. Personally, as someone who prides herself on discipline, I find joy in rewarding myself regularly for my consistency. For instance, I commit to working out 4–5 times a week, meal prepping to avoid eating out, indulging in just one piece of chocolate a day instead of five, going to bed before 9 PM, being dressed for the gym by 6 AM, starting work at 9 AM, eating lunch at 12 PM, and enjoying bubble baths twice a month. Paying bills on time grants me the freedom of my own space, and regular car maintenance ensures I can go wherever I please without unexpected troubles.

As a Libra, balance is essential for me. Discipline without its counterpart isn’t an option. I need to enjoy some red wine at least twice a month and indulge in a big sushi takeout when I’m getting my period. True freedom lies in this balance — being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor and showing up with purpose and intention. That is discipline.
